BFT Welding & Fabrication: The Roswell Owner’s Guide

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT’s operator line breaks into three families where welding and fabrication issues show up differently. The Phobos and Ares swing-gate series (Phobos BT, Phobos AC, Ares 1000, Ares 1500) use cast-aluminum operator housings bolted to steel jamb brackets. Those brackets fatigue first, especially on the heavier Ares units pulling 15-foot iron gates. The Deimos and Sub sliding-gate lines need track-level fabrication: weld repairs to the drive base, catch posts, or the rack-gear mounting channel. The Thalia pedestrian and light-residential swing operators rarely need structural welding but often need custom-fabricated adapter plates when replacing a failed unit on an older post.

To identify your exact model, check the silver BFT data label on the operator housing. The part number format is typically three letters followed by four digits (ARE1500, PHO1000, DEI800). For fabrication work, we also need the gate leaf weight and the post material. A 4×4 wood post with a Phobos BT pulling a 600-pound gate is a different bracket spec than a 6×6 steel post on the same motor. We carry both OEM BFT mounting hardware and fabricated equivalents. The OEM brackets run 20-30% higher and carry BFT’s two-year parts warranty. Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate arm pulls away from the post at full open or full close. This usually means the jamb bracket has cracked at the weld or the bolt holes have elongated. On BFT Ares units in Roswell’s older neighborhoods near Canton Street, we see this when the original installer used a single 1/4-inch plate instead of the double-shear bracket the gate weight demands.
• Grinding or scraping sound that changes with temperature. Steel brackets expand and contract. A weld that held through last winter may have work-hardened and cracked. The arm geometry shifts by an eighth of an inch, enough for the operator to bind against the stop bolt.
• “Obstacle detected” or excessive force errors on the BFT control board. The operator thinks something is blocking the gate because the mechanical load has increased. Often the root cause is a sagging frame or a bent catch post, not the motor itself.
• Visible rust weeping from bracket welds or post bases. Roswell’s clay-heavy soil holds moisture against buried post bases. A bracket that looked sound last year can be hollow behind the paint. We cut these open, document the corrosion, and fabricate replacements from galvanized stock.
• The gate “walks” on its track or the rack gear skips teeth. On BFT Deimos and Sub sliding systems, this points to a shifted drive-base weld or a catch post that has tilted. The rack gear needs parallel alignment within 2 millimeters over the full travel length. Anything more and the pinion gear eats the rack.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a short list of checks that won’t put you at risk. Verify the BFT model number from the label. Measure the gate leaf weight if you have the original installation paperwork. Look for obvious bolt looseness or bracket movement with the power off and the gate in manual release mode. That’s where the safe DIY ends.

Welding on a loaded gate structure is genuinely dangerous. The torsion from a 600-pound iron leaf can shift without warning when a bracket is cut free. Cutting torches near a BFT operator housing can damage the control board or the internal limit-switch assembly. And post-excavation near buried electrical conduit for the gate power run creates an electrocution hazard we won’t ask a homeowner to navigate.
